Journey 19th November – 4th December

Had a great time at last night’s opening at G90 – Thanks to all at G90 and those who attended the private view.  So nice to see so many friends at the private view and meet some collectors!  The exhibition is now open and I’ve included a picture of one of the new works from the triptych. Hope you can get to see some of the work at the Gallery – G90 is a fantastic space great layout and it’s been an awesome opportunity for me to lay out a series of work in one space for the first time.  Also one of the main comments I received about the artwork last night was it’s scale, most people had only seen work online and did not realise the size of the pieces especially the new triptych which loom over you as you come into the gallery space.  So if you get the chance come along to G90 The address is at the bottom of this post.

New Prints Available at ‘ J O U R N E Y ‘ Private View this Friday

The Private view for the exhibition ‘ J O U R N E Y ‘ at Gallery 90 is this Friday 18th November from 7pm,

As well as featuring drawings in tea and Ink made over the last year the exhibition will showcase a triptych of 5 foot drawings fresh from the Studio.  I do hope you will be able to join me to help celebrate the first year of working as an artist, can’t wait to share the new work with you.

Also accompanying the show are 2 new limited edition prints;

‘Strength‘ – 60 x 42cm printed on 330 gsm Saunders Somerset paper, with varnish layer treatments and gold leaf accents.  The print is a limited edition of 50 published by fine art print suppliers Harwood King, and will be available for £270 from the 18th November.

 

 

‘Another Place’ A2 Giclee print on 300gsm Hahnemuhle etching paper, edition of 25,

Another place (normally £150) will be available for sale at a specially discounted price of £120 at the private view of Journey.

Somewhere Else

Unusually a second post in the same day but I have been catching up with some work in the studio and am about to send this piece over to the Ben Oakley Gallery in Greenwich – hopefully tomorrow.  It is titled ‘Somewhere Else’ and is another piece that has derived from the violence of flowers series but as it is more contemplative – I don’t think it belongs with the others.

Today in the studio has been great – if I stay inside the sun shines – if I go outside for 5 minutes it lashes down with rain.. best stay inside for everyone’s sake! – hope you like the new work, something different about this one..

Undergrowth

Undergrowth is an installation drawing made in ink and tea during the Leytonstone Arts Trail in 2011. The drawing consists of floral forms influenced by the plants surrounding the house which stretch along one side of the wall in the house. From the front door along the hallway, up the stairs and reaching up to the ceiling, the floral forms are a mixture of real and imaginary flowers. Amongst the flowers are a number of bees drawn which flow in an arc until they reach the hive. Represented in the drawing by a girl with outstretched hands from which drips of honey fall to the ground. The Violence of Flowers

Yesterday I took 5 new pieces down to Inkd gallery and talked about some of the new work.  It was good to air the new pieces as there was a slight change in direction and the work was starting to focus solely on floral forms.  I have recently received good feedback from some purely floral works, poppy and undergrowth especially, and I think it is this that has given me the impotus to move into this project without any portrtraiture or human elements both with more confidence and a renewed sense of energy.

It was surprising to react in such a strong way to what are essentially to me study drawings of wild flowers that were picked from the grounds of the studio at Norlington Road, but the reaction has reintroduced a vigorous line and mark making to my drawing that I felt had been missing from the initial pieces I made recently exploring bees… I learnt that sometimes it is good to follow this impulse and not tobe stubborn about the route that the work takes.

below are a few images of detail from the works which include partial studies of thistles roses and other wild flowers … I will be posting completed images of the work fairly soon when I have an idea how the project will develop.  For now I can only say that these pieces are intense emotional responses to the plants and floral forms in front of me, hope you enjoy them as much as I did making them – Carne

3 New Giclee Prints @ £75 each by Carne Griffiths

This thursday at 6:30 pm we will be opening the doors of SORTED london’s exhibition featuring 10 artists and illustrators. I will be showing 5 original pieces of work 4 of which have not been on show before.

To go with these pieces I will be launching 3 giclee prints of the work on display.  The new prints are Metamorphosis, Sunlight and Coma, the original of which sold through Art Republic. It would be great to see you at the exhibition which runs daily 10am-8:30pm until the 15th of June at East Gallery, Brick Lane – full details

Nature’s Healer

New piece of work breaking down anatomical shapes into more abstract areas, not wishing to move away from the figurative but trying to incorporate successfully automatic and subconscious mark making alongside figurative drawing – starting to take shape I think..

New work from the Studio

After a short break in Thassos, Greece it has been nice to return to drawing in the studio and preparing for several group shows this summer. shown below are 2 pieces inspired by the recent break – firstly by a book I read whilst away and secondly by the variety of different forms of nature experienced.

New work from Studio 18

Bit of a gap in blog posts while I settled into the new space but it has been a good move for me.  I’ve posted some of the recent work below and am currently working on a couple of new pieces in there.  The studio is shared with 2 other artists Michelle Sweetman and Neil Benjamin, and it’s great to be back in a busy creative environment. I havea few shows coming up in the next week or so.  An impromptu open hang in the Rag Factory, in the the apricot studio on the 14th April where I will be showing a few small ltd edition prints of various pieces – and also I have 2 new works in the Royal Academy Original Print Fair on the 19th 20th and 21st of April.  My work will be appearing on the eyestorm stand and I will be along on the 19th April evening to see this show for the first time.

Moving Studio

Today, I’m gathering up all the odds and ends lying around the house  to take into the new studio, so I’ll sadly leaving Mitre Studios in Walthamstow, a great studio space above the Paekakiriki press run by Matt Mackenzie, wish all the best to Alke, Della, Kirsten and Martin.

The new studio will give a chance to work on some larger ink drawings that I have been thinking about recently.  8 New pieces of paper stretched up and drying so looking forward to a week of submerging myself in the drawings in there.

In 2 days time the digital versions of Parassita and 5 other works will be presented at Art Paris courtesy of Saatchi online
