Quick update of work from the studio and some images from the latest piece release. Will be getting some details out about November’s show at Gallery 90 soon. Thanks for following. If you are in the leytonstone area tomorrow – drop by to see the work in The Stone Space – I have a new ripped wallpaper peace on show in the Unwrapped exhibition.

Studio Time
It’s been a busy couple of weeks with this project and that project, upcoming shows and opportunities but I’ve neglected the studio so I thought I’d post a work in progress and fill in a little of what shows are coming up in the month of October
Here’s an as yet untitled piece (I’ve got a couple of ideas for the title but undecided yet how it will finish) I’ve also been filming some work in the studio against my better judgement! but to use as promo for an upcoming show.. I’ve made a video of part of this work in progress which I will be uploading soon.
So apart from planning some work with local community projects, The Stone Space and helping Co-ordinate the Drawing Crowds exhibition with fellow artist El Bedlow, I have prepared work for upcoming shows and been fortunate enough to have work accepted with the following galleries.
Inkd Gallery – a fantastic space down on North Road in Brighton – They have just received ‘uprooted’ and ‘take cover’ (shown below). I am particularly pleased with the uprooted piece as it represents an area of drawing which I strive to bring into my work but is not something I can force… if you get a chance to pop into Inkd – ask to have a look at the piece – it may be tucked away in a drawer for safekeeping for now but I’m hoping it will grace their walls soon

Uprooted & Take Cover – now showing with Inkd Gallery
Opus have requested 4 pieces from the violence of flowers series, the works Crushed, Taunted, Torn and Smother are available online from their website now.
I will be participating in a number of shows coming up in October,
Multiplied contemporary editions fair at Christies with Eyestorm where I will be showing the ltd edition prints of Rose.
Then in mid October I will be showing some brand new pieces at an exhibition at the Hospital Club with West London Art Factory – put together by Jewel Goodby and featuring the following confirmed artists, Inkie / Carne Griffiths / Max Wiedemann / George Morton-Clarke / Ben Slow / Danny O’Connor / Fin Dac / Zeus / Cosmo Sarson / Milo / Warren J Fox / Jewel / Laura Tinald / Belinda Frikh / Joanna Scislowicz /
Then at the end of October I will be showing 6 original pieces with Eyestorm from the Violence of flowers at the Affordable Art Fair @ Hamspstead Heath….
Then there is a possibility of a solo show at the end of Oct too… but I’ll fill in more about that when I know what’s happening.
If you would like any more information about any of the shows or are interested in any of the work just drop me an email to carne@carnegriffiths.com
Looking forward to getting into the studio tomorrow!
New work from the Studio & Evening Drinks!
Looking forward to tonight’s private view for Violence of Flowers and seeing friends that I have not seen for far too long. If you can make it along I will be in the Castle from about 6pm – PV runs till they throw us out.
In the studio I have worked on a few new pieces, recently finished are ‘Overgrown’ and ‘Take Cover’ and am working on a new piece which is now nearly complete – will be posting later.
Hope to see you tonight
Private View – Invitation, Thurs 8th September
This Thursday is the preview for Violence of Flowers at the Castle Pub in E17, I have been in the castle for a couple of days now making sure that the food and the beer is up to standard and can happily report that both are ready for consumption by all. If you are heading from central London grab the victoria line to Walthamstow – The castle is a 10 minute walk from there. I have been juggling the work that I will be showing in this show and have finally decided on a set of 7 pieces which reflect the entire collection. I will also have the other pieces from the show in the portfolio so you will be able to get an idea of the full body of work.
Also starting this thursday – is the official opening of the Cultivate Gallery on Vyner street I will be showing Uprooted alongside some great work from artists Sean Worrall (also Gallery Coordinator), David Agenjo, Infinity Bunce, Steven Rawlings, Emma Harvey, Danielle Hodson, Gaia and Joanna Rose Tidy.
First Thursday
Great opportunity to show one of my new pieces down at a new space on Vyner Street taken over by Sean worrall and crew and put up with speed for tonights First Thursday! Happy to give some new work an airing just before the E17 trail over in Walthamstow, have chosen to show the piece Rooted.. . The piece Somewhere is on it’s way to Eyestorm and the piece ‘somewhere else’ may be hanging soon in the Ben Oakley Gallery – Cheers Ben!
think it will be up for only a few days but will be good to get it on a gallery wall. So much going on when it’s First Thursdays – everyone clambering for a prime spot!!
I’m going to be heading over to see the excellent work of Paul Cummings who is also based at the Norlington Road Studios here in Leyton. It’s been a real pleasure to talk to Paul about his large scale Acrylic paintings, and to have my mind blown by his knowledge and application of colour theory and so much more.. Paul is exhibiting in the Exposure Gallery, Soho, which is situated on Little Portland Street . He is showing a collection of charcoal portraits made from studies of friends and taken from mobile phone images – it’s a great collection of work and I’m looking forward to seeing it set up in the space – The PV Runs from 6:30pm to 8:30pm when I’ll be dashing back over to Vyner Street to take in more of the shows there…
just enough time to take a snap of some work in the studio and go frame up the uprooted piece.
For those heading east – enjoy first Thursdays
Somewhere Else
Unusually a second post in the same day but I have been catching up with some work in the studio and am about to send this piece over to the Ben Oakley Gallery in Greenwich – hopefully tomorrow. It is titled ‘Somewhere Else’ and is another piece that has derived from the violence of flowers series but as it is more contemplative – I don’t think it belongs with the others.
Today in the studio has been great – if I stay inside the sun shines – if I go outside for 5 minutes it lashes down with rain.. best stay inside for everyone’s sake! – hope you like the new work, something different about this one..
New set of work in full – The Violence of Flowers
Here is the set of work that I have called ‘The Violence of Flowers’ – I hope you enjoy them
Hanging – The Violence of Flowers
Went round to hang the work today for the violence of flowers preview this weekend. I have decided on 7 new floral pieces of work which after the preview will be transported to the Castle in Walthamstow to be shown as part of the E17 Art Trail. I have ommitted the portrait pieces from this show as I think they seem disjointed from the series of work ..
Also this week three new pieces of work have been requested from Opus Gallery based in Newcastle. The pieces are Find Yourself, Envy and Revive. 2 of these pieces have not been shown before and this is also the first metre square drawing of mine that has been exhibited, if you would like to see more detailed images of the work there is a handy preview over at the Opus website – you can view it here
Also newly installed in the Art Republic gallery is the lightbox installation – Flower of Life – based upon the geometric pattern, this double sided drawing can now be seen pulsing in the basement of the soho store, the piece is accompanied by the drawing Quill – the link being that both pieces reference the work and life of Da Vinci.
Lots of exciting things happening around the studios and also in other parts of Leytonstone – plans aren’t 100% secured yet but hopefully we will be able to spill the beans on a new project soon…. watch this space
Uprooted from the Violence of Flowers
Good day in the studio yesterday – after collecting work from the Contemporary Romantics show I got back in the studio just before the heavens opened and finished off a new piece of work.. was a strange drawing experience and one of the more ‘automatic’ drawings I have carried out recently. Thought I would post it to the blog as I haven’t decided whether it fits with the series ‘Violence of Flowers’ but maybe it works because it is so different to the others. Most importantly it was a really euphoric experience making the work and I’m keen to share it so here it is!
Good News / Bad News / Carry on Regardless
Its turning out to be a rollercoaster week – with great news hearing of sales of The Harvest, The Vine, Nectar, Metamorphosis Strength and Comfort – thank you to Ink’d Gallery, Eyestorm, Art Republic and Opus – meanwhile in the studio work is building up quickly on ‘The Violence of Flowers’ a series of work which I am fully immersed in at the moment. This may have been the reason it hadn’t really sunk in that the studios where I work are being considered for redevelopment and a planning application slapped on the lamp-post outside the entrance. If things go according to (their) plan – Norlington road studios in Leyton will turn into a mews providing some nice new flats for the area, meanwhile a growing community of artists from the surrounding areas will be without studio space which is becoming increasingly scarce!! especially in E10/E11
This on the back of a wonderful Arts Trail Experience leaves a real bitter taste in the mouth… well I have decided that it’s something I will become actively involved in opposing – whether it means I have to find a new workplace or not the main thing is that life and the current project of work goes on for the time being and I intend to make the most of it. I have only released detail shots of the work so far and a couple of development pieces so I thought I would add one finished piece to the blog, it misrepresents the series slightly but it is the first piece to reintroduce portraiture to the series. The piece shown below is as yet untitled – it’s title will depend on the completed series of work but I think it reintroduces a bit of vigour to the drawn line – I hope you like it
I will be holding a small private preview of the series on the 27th of August in Leytonstone, and will be showing selected works as part of the E17 Arts Trail which begins on the 1st September. In the meantime I am looking for a venue to display the full collection of works towards the end of September… just need to find a gallery that would be interested in showing the series as a whole.
