It’s been a busy few weeks organising the 100sqft exhibition and Arts After Dark exhibition in New Orléans, I have chosen three pieces to show at Arts After Dark and these include The Harvest, Rose and Acceptance from my recent series of drawings – I will also be showing some new light box pieces there.
The exhibition at the Redgate gallery put together by Laura Ward and James Higgott – looks like it is going to be awesome – I had a lot of fun making some new less serious free flowing illustrations to offer for sale at the show here’s a sneak preview of the 30 postcards that will be for sale between £10 to £30.00 at the show.
There are some great artists involved with the show too Featured artists include
Mark Burton, Emma Campbell, Robert Fitzmaurice, Claire Higgott, Jonny Hughes, Viveca Koh LRPS, Lulu Parent, John Riordan, David Sampson, She Makes War, Ellie Smithand Laura Ward
During my time as an embroidery designer floral motifs such as oak leaf, laurel, and thistle cropped up continuously and they are finding a welcome place within this new series of work. This piece used the floral motif to create a false armour, with imagery that relates directly to the motifs worn in the british army and over seas by higher ranking officers, particularly generals and field marshals. The motifs also occur regularly in consular and diplomatic uniforms and are used to denote rank and status.
Decided not to work too much into this, there was enough rose leaf and enough suggestion of the overall form to leave the outer pencil marks to describe the shape. Again this piece is drawn from a reference image and has marked a departure from the automatic process, the leaves and foliage are all drawn from memory / free although I have been making studies inbetween large pieces.
This piece is worked in brown havana ink with blue waterman ink, tea and water on stretched bockingford watercolour paper.
Just posting some work in progress, trying to be careful not to overwork these pieces which involve over painting with layers of water / tea – layering the ink drawings like this gives the drawings more substance and a welcome introduction of colour. I think most of this work looks better unfinished but it is always tempting to keep adding…
Tried a new technique today to allow more light to bleed through the watercolour paper – enabling me to select more transparent areas and describe light shapes – decided to make this ‘bulb’ light box – MOTHS – which appear as the bulb is switched on.
I have been fortunate enough to secure the Luna Lounge venue for the Arts trail in Leytonstone which has distinct advantages for the lightbox work I am now producing – Firstly there are 3 or 4 large scale lightboxes already installed on the walls of the Luna Lounge which I can slip work into and secondly the lighting is perfect for seeing through the postcard boxes. I have now constructed 3 new lightboxes to house the postcard project and am embarking on a series of work exploring the theme of secrecy and the unseen which will use a similar format. Below are sample images of the three boxes in daylight and with the internal lights switched on to show through the postmarks and wording on the reverse – these boxes are currently for sale at £100.00 each contact art@100sqft.co.uk
Looking forward to getting involved with this years LAT – particularly with 100sqft but also with the great ‘let’s fill leytonstone with art’ which encourages individuals in the borough to display artwork in their windows.
Sounds like a great idea and a great opportunity to play with the lightbox idea on a large scale!! looking forward to see what people show!
