The London Art Fair, The Wing Assignment, and other projects of distinction

So the London Art Fair is now over, a massive thank you to Opus Arts for supporting my work and showing the pieces at the London Art Fair – all wort represented at the fair (and more besides) are available from their website http://www.opus-art.com .

There was much expectation from Artists and galleries across the country at this year’s Fair, lots of great things on show and in my humble opinion some not so great things.  Galleries pushing boundaries and some playing it safe.  The Fair is always a good chance to see a lot of work in one space but that can also be it’s downfall – being bombarded with so many pieces in one room can sometimes give you a bit of a headache, however I really enjoyed the project space this year and discovered some exciting artists who opened my eyes to possible ways of working.  It’s good to feed on this visual bombardment and absorb new influences but visiting the fair just makes me want to return to the studio and push my work further.  Sometimes it can make you realise how far you have to go with your own body of work, it highlights things that you are missing from your own pieces and bodies of work but in a positive way.

Today I am working on a couple of projects and looking forward to some events in February which seem to have arrived far faster than I anticipated!!

The Wing Assignment

A good friend, Nina Farrell from KIAD (way back in 95!!), has put together a fantastic concept for an exhibition, using wings as an influence and starting point she has called upon various artists to produce images which will form part of an exhibition later this year.  I have decided to keep the same format I used for the Journey pieces and am currently exploring the theme of old nursery rhymes and superstition for the piece.  Here’s some work in progress images.

The Sketchbook Project

The fantastic Sketchbook project, which I became involved with last year is now touring the UK as well as many locations worldwide.  If you haven’t heard of this project already – you should look it up.  inspiringly ambitious, the project sent out over 28,000 books last year and exhibited just under 10,000 (artists!!) returned full sketchbooks as part of it’s tour in 2011.  I was really happy to have work in the touring exhibition which allows you to check out an artists sketchbook – library book style – from any number of it’s travelling locations.  This year’s book needs to be complete by the end of January.  The work I have produced for this year is based on the concept along the line, and has really been a therapeutic return to automatic and abstract drawing.  The type of work that you can really lose yourself in.  It’s tempting to just travel around with this little book soaking up the atmosphere of different places and allowing drawings to take shape.  I am looking to devote a couple of hours a day over the next week to complete the work but for now here is a sneak peek at some of the pages.

Postcards

Sending out packs of the new winter postcards which are available from Etsy.  These have been great fun to send – something about sending artwork through the post and making a parcel something really special to receive gives me a lot of joy. Over the last couple of days I have sent out about 15 packs and I am not sure if I can continue to manage a full drawing on each envelope but it’s fun so I find it hard to resist.  Plus the final action of sealing the envelope with a wax sealing stamp is just so satisfying.

Here’s a sample image of the cards and some of the envelopes but you can see plenty more over on my facebook page (I post them up just before sending)

Is it winter?

It certainly feels like it.. I’m coming to the end of the Journey exhibition at Gallery 90 (finishes this Sunday 4th December) , the winter feeling is taking it’s toll. Studio is colder and getting artwork from 1 place to another is a lot less enjoyable than usual.  However today I sent 7 little packs of postcards this afternoon, and it always makes me smile that people all over the world are requesting little bits of work.

It’s always the little things that bring so much enjoyment, as I sealed the manilla envelopes for packs going to Doncaster, Potters Bar, San Marco, Texas, Germany and Moscow amongst others and sealed them with a wax seal rose, I realised just how fortunate I was to be making a living as an artist and doing something that I thoroughly enjoy.  Sometimes it feels like a hard slog, when the work isn’t flowing, and it seems an uphill climb to get into a creative place  but just knowing that there are people out there encountering the work, all over the world … well that is everything.

That’s why I put so much energy into those little packs of cards.  For just £5 you can have a pack of postcards delivered to your doorstep (in time for xmas) each lovingly sealed in a wax stamped envelope with a fountain pen floral sketch on the reverse..  I now have 3 packs of ltd edition cards which can be ordered through Etsy – if you’d like something personal from an artist to use as a stocking filler this Christmas – I’d be only too happy to personalise the envelope for you.. clicking the images below will take you to the etsy store where it’s easy to place an order.

As a special xmas offer you can get all three sets, that’s 12 postcards for just £12 delivered here

There are also larger prints of work available from Etsy and of course original pieces of work available from EYESTORM | INKD | ART REPUBLIC | OPUS and of course Gallery 90 with the works from the current solo show.

Digital Arts Interview – 14th Nov 2011

Digital Arts have featured an interview about my working practice so I thought I’d share it on the blog too, alternatively you can see it on the Digital Arts website here

Carne Griffiths brews up an exhibition

Many artists and designers use tea as an integral part of their creative process – to drink and pause and reflect on a work before applying final touches or heading off in a new direction – but the beverage is much more instrumental to the work of the artist Carne Griffiths. He creates what he describes as “drawings in ink and tea [that] offer a form of escapism to the viewer”, mixing portraits with floral shapes and watery smudges and drips for a style imbued with both sadness and strength

Carne’s solo show, Journeys, is at Gallery 90in London from Saturday, so in advance of the show we thought we’d find out more about his art and creative process.

DA: How did you first get into the use of liquids such as tea in your work?

CG: “I have drawn with fountain pen for many years, often with plain water washes. When I decided to leave my post of creative director at an embroidery firm to pursue a love of drawing I experimented with liquids such as brandy.

“I liked the effect this had on the inks I was using but decided that an alternative that wasn’t such a wasteful crime would be a better option so I started experimenting with different types of tea.”

DA: What does using such materials enable you to do that conventional painting techniques alone do not?

CG: “Colour is a difficult area for me and something that I have become more confident with in recent works.  My confidence in using different materials is growing but the benefit of working with a medium such as tea is that it creates a naturally harmonious palette.

“I can introduce vibrant colours but the tea does the job of mixing with these to create a balance in the work. I know this could have been achieved with a reduced palette of colours but there is something about the whole process of brewing the tea and working with a colour that becomes more intense or darker in tone as the work progresses.”

DA: How does your past in embroidery design influence your work?

CG: “I undertook an apprenticeship in embroidery and it was something that I didn’t take lightly, there is a great responsibility learning from someone who has devoted 50 years of their life to understanding and developing a trade, and then the challenge is taking that information and making the job your own.  That kind of intensity and study of technique is bound to have an influence on both your drawing style and also your approach to artwork.

“A lot of my influences manifest themselves in quite a subtle way – sometimes subconsciously. I think the reason that many of my compositions sit within the page and fit within given shapes is down to this training and obviously the floral elements and pattern within my work derive from my embroidery background.

“Looking back at my work over the past year, the influence of floral pattern seems to be less evident in later pieces.  I am becoming more interested in expressive lines and less controlled work, which is one of the advantages of working without constraint.”

DA: Could you give us a brief insight into your creative process for an artwork?

CG: “Spontaneity and chance is the key to most of my work, allowing myself the freedom to change the direction of a piece of work at any time is what excites me most about making art. I can be working on a piece and suddenly have the impulse to tip a cup of tea almost entirely over the work and then to throw the piece around moving the ink away from the underlaying lines. This process of ‘destruction’ is found in most of the pieces that I consider successful.

“I have a real passion for outsider art and automatic drawing – show me the work of someone who considers themselves unable to draw and I will marvel at their approach.  So part of my aim in any piece of work is to reach that point where I become less concerned with the act of making an image and become absorbed in the drawing itself.

“The work of Andre Masson and the incredible tortured drawings of Antonin Artaud are examples to me of the raw power of the drawn line.  I am of the opinion that creativity has less to do with technical ability than intuition, freedom of expression and confidence in mark making.”

DA: How did you come to be exhibiting at Gallery 90?

CG: “I was introduced to the gallery by the artist Mason Storm who is also exhibiting at G90 later in December.  He’s been pretty instrumental in arranging the whole thing and I’m grateful for the opportunity.”

DA: What journeys does the title of the show refer to?

CG: “The show title reflects upon several types of journey. It alludes to the process of creating the work, to the discovery involved during each piece and also to the way I have approached my own artwork over the last year allowing things to happen organically without too much concern for direction.”

The exhibition runs from Nov 19 to Dec 3 at Gallery 90, 90 Mountgrove Road, Finsbury Park, London, N5 2LT. The private view is on Nov 18 from 7pm.
